Amsterdam The Chiellerie

From SATURDAY 8 - 13 November 2008 The Chiellerie presents:
“The Gospel According to Brian O’Blivion”
The enigmatic guerrilla-poet and visual artist Laser 3.14 will unleash his vision on the interrelatedness between humanity and omnipotence of technology. In a reality where mankind is driven to self-consuming meta-consumption by the very technologies he has created, how far can and will our symbiotic relationship with the digital and the cathode-ray tube go? Already, our cosmology of truths has been supplanted by an amorphous and infinite number of hyper-realities and truisms. What of our organic autonomy? Will we transmorph, as Laser suggests, into neo-anthropomorphic techno-beings…? More info www.laser314.com/

Pieter Hugo travelled twice to Nigeria (in 2005 and 2007) to follow a legendary group of itinerant street artists known as the Hyena Men. These men earn their money by performing on the streets with hyenas, pythons and baboons, and by selling traditional medicines.

AEROSOL SYMPOHNIES Part II
A confluence of classical music and Street Art.
Opening: Saturday, August 16th until mid october 2008

Last year, summer 2007, GO Gallery worked with a number of
international and local Street Artists, to present
AEROSOL SYMHPONIES.
(The word Aerosol being derived from the Spray Can)
In this showing, two worlds come together. The exhibit is a meeting
of the world of classical music and modern art, street art.
All the artists have chosen a piece of classical music, which has
touched them personally. The music, its origin and the story behind
it have been studied carefully. With this piece of music, the artists
have then made an artwork, a composition of their own, a painting.
Just as the composer was inspired by his surroundings, the artist has
let him/herself be inspired by their favorite composer.

Kors van Bennekom - Kors's Choice
11 July - 14 September 2008
Foam presents an exhibition celebrating the seventy-fifth
birthday of the Amsterdam photographer Kor van Bennekom
(b. 1933). It was in 1956, at the height of the Cold War, that
Kor van Bennekom began working as a photographer for
the communist newspaper De Waarheid, where he
remained with until 1965. His photos provide a magnificent
record of ordinary, hard-working people in a city rebuilding
after the war, racked by poverty and unrest. In 1966
Van Bennekom helped found Uitkrant voor Amsterdammers,
a magazine of listings and articles about culture in the capital.
Van Bennekom brought street photography into the theatre,
portraying Dutch and international actors, musicians,
ballet dancers and cabaret artists in a bold and vibrant style.
At the same time, Van Bennekom also photographed
his family. These photos tell the simple, unadorned story
of a home life in which his wife Ine, his children,
grandchildren and he himself are the main characters.
Kor van Bennekom is a combination of street photographer,
theatre photographer and family photographer, whose
remarkable oeuvre reflects the history of the Netherlands
in the second half of the twentieth century.

exposeert de Zwitserse kunstenaar Hanz Daniel beelden,
objecten en installaties in het Tuinpark Zonnehoek.

materiaal uit de directe omgeving.Zo ontstaan stapels o.a.

Amsterdam Arps & Co

Animus Anima
a photo exhibition by Paula Kajzar and Antonio Pellicano from
Calabria at Arps&Co in the Dikker&Thijs Gallery,
Prinsengracht 438 , until 28th July
Two photographers, a pair in love, show us their animus
anima in abstract images, made on the stage of dance in
the Calabrese theatre where they perform a steady job
as stage photographers. An ideal environment to create
from their metaphor a personal imaging language.
"An invisible play develops on the stage of our lives.
It concerns everybody. A drama with uncountable
scenery's sprouting from the soul. The people in our
existence are moving on this inner stage.
But more then these characters that come from the
outer world, everybody hosts a universe called
Animus Anima. Two elements that are perpetually moving.
This evokes our psycho constantly to separate and attach,
to long and find, to loosen and to bind." more info

Stanley Donwood
EVERYBODY'S HAPPY NOWADAYS
1 juli-3 aug, V!P's Spiegelstraat 8 Amsterdam
For over twelve years British artist Stanley Donwood
determined the visual identity of Radiohead. He designs their
covers, posters and official merchandise, and in a joint
collaboration with frontman Thom Yorke he translates their
musical ideas and social concerns in appealing images that
immediately settle in the eye of the beholder.
Numerous projects later the line between Radiohead’s
music and Donwood’s artwork has become increasingly thin,
which gave him the status of Radiohead’s semi-official sixth
member. Donwood: “I think that my obsession with
nuclear apocalypse, Ebola pandemics, global cataclysm
and Radiohead’s particular brand of unsettling melody
have gone together quite well.” more info www.vipsart.nl/

Malick Sidibé - Chemises
Foam presents a unique work by the celebrated Malinese
photographer Malick Sidibé (b. 1935). Sidibé is the eminence
grise of African photography and one of the first African
photographers to win recognition in the West for his work.
Centrepiece of the show is a series of original chemises,
coloured sheets of card on which Sidibé pasted small prints of
the photos he took at parties and events in Bamako,
the capital of Mali. Partygoers were able to view and order
copies of photos after the event. The chemises displayed
here date from between 1962 and 1973. They are
accompanied by numerous portraits taken by Sidibé in the
1970s at his studio in Bagadadji, a working-class area of
Bamako. Together the displays offer a unique and often
heart-warming insight into Malinese society in the early
years following independence. Malick Sidibé received
a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement for his entire
oeuvre at the Venice Biennale of 2007. This year Sidibé
was also honoured by the International Centre for
Photography (ICP) in New York with their 24th Lifetime
Achievement Award. info: http://www.foam.nl/

Mi Matties & Kristal
Photographer Paul Blanca is back
photos from the opening 7 Jun 2008
Mi MattiesThe portrait series Mi Matties (Amsterdam street
slang for 'my friends') originated during Blanca’s wanderings
through Amsterdam. Throughout the city, Blanca contacted
members of street gangs and managed to coax the tough
street kids to his studio to model for him. The result is an
exciting serie of black and white portraits. The Mi Matties
exhibition consists of twenty-five photographs,
some of which are printed in a life-size format.
Paul Blanca also created a box of photographs depicting
women as candy, named Kristal. The nude models
were doused in chocolate, sugar glaze or powdered sugar,
but you would not call them 'sweet'. The box contains
19 largely erotic photographs and a poem composed by
Joost Zwagerman especially for this serie.
The Kristal box is available in a print run of 30 copies.

Images of St Petersburg
7 June to 24 August 2008
The exhibition ‘Images of St Petersburg’, which includes over
100 photographs from the Hermitage collection,
provides a unique opportunity to see life in St Petersburg in
the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the city was still
the capital and lively centre of the Russian empire.
Visitors to St Petersburg will discover that in spite of
revolution and war the centre of the city and the Hermitage
were very well preserved, as can be seen in the historic
photographs offering pleasantly familiar views in this
9th exhibition in the Hermitage Amsterdam,
